PNOE: Nutrition & Metabolic Testing

Metabolic Testing helps us identify what kind of training and nutrition is best for you so we can optimize your performance and ensure your success.

At BARWIS we offer the gold standard in metabolic testing & nutrition planning using the PNOE System.

What is PNOE?

The PNOE Metabolic Device is an accurate mobile tool used by major sports teams, Olympic athletes, and university research programs to assess oxygen usage and carbon dioxide clearance at rest and during exercise.

The PNOE is a clinical-grade metabolic analyzer designed to assess oxygen usage and carbon dioxide clearance at rest and during exercise. This assessment offers accurate measurements of your metabolic, heart, lung, and cellular fitness.

What is Metabolic Testing?

Metabolic tests measure the rate at which your body burns calories and uses oxygen during rest or during different activities.

  • Measuring Resting Metabolic Rate = the number of calories your body burns at rest

  • Measuring Metabolic Efficiency = the number of calories your body burns during exercise

  • Measuring VO2 Max = the maximum amount of oxygen your body can utilize during exercise

PNOE Testing Options

PNOE testing at BARWIS is another assessment we can use to create goal-specific training and nutrition recommendations that take athletic performance, daily productivity, and general health to the next level. At BARWIS, we use scientific tools to take away the guesswork when it comes to designing sport-specific nutrition and training plans.  PNOE helps us decide what kind of training and nutrition is best for you so we can optimize your performance and ensure your success.

Resting Metabolic Rate Test

Metabolic test: The Resting Metabolic Rate test uses state-of-the-art technology to measure the number of calories your body needs at rest. You will also receive your estimated Total Energy Expenditure (TEE).

VO2 Max Test

Determine your aerobic capacity and the maximal oxygen your body can consume during exercise through VO2 Max Testing. Results will help you establish optimal heart rate (HR) zones for exercise, scientifically guide your training, and indicate your risk for cardiovascular disease.

Why should I invest in
PNOE Metabolic Testing?

For athletes, the data will be used to determine the limiting factor(s) in your body and what kind of training to do in order to improve performance in your chosen sport or activity. Along with a training program, metabolic testing can lead to individualized nutrition recommendations to help you fuel your body for peak performance.

For those interested in weight loss or general health and wellness, PNOE helps determine your metabolic efficiency, heart health, and lung function. The results then can be used to design a specified diet and workout plan according to what your body needs to reach your health and body composition goals.

What to Expect

Resting Metabolic Rate Test:

Prior to your RMR test, there are a few important things to note:

  • You must complete a 12-hour fast overnight, prior to your RMR test. e.g. if your appointment is at 8 am, you must only drink water after 8 pm the evening before.

  • You must not consume alcohol or caffeine 12 hours prior to the test.

  • The use of stimulants such as nicotine (smoking), appetite suppressants, and allergy medication can affect your results.

  • You must avoid moderate and vigorous exercise at least 24 hours prior to the test.

  • Failure to meet these standards may result in an inaccurate result.

  • Attire for the test: No specific attire is required.

During the resting test, you simply breathe into the PNOE device for 10-20 minutes. The machine analyzes your breathing and reports total calorie burn and fuel utilization data (fats or carbs).

This test will let you know the caloric requirements you need based on your metabolic efficiency and your age and gender. Your report will provide you with information about the fuel sources your body uses during daily activities with percentages divided between fats and carbohydrates.

VO2 Max Test:

Prior to your VO2 Max test, there are a few important things to note:

  • Don't eat at least 8 hours prior to the test

  • You must not consume alcohol or caffeine 12 hours prior to the test.

  • The use of stimulants such as nicotine (smoking), appetite suppressants, and allergy medication can affect your results.

  • You must avoid moderate and vigorous exercise at least 24 hours prior to the test.

  • Failure to meet these standards may result in an inaccurate result.

  • Attire for the test: comfortable workout attire

During the VO2 Max Test, you will be fitted with the PNOE device and asked to choose between the stationary bike or treadmill for your active metabolism test. After a three-minute warm up you will be guided through the exercise test. Each minute the test will become more difficult until you are too exhausted to continue your pace.

This test provides a breath-by-breath analysis of how much oxygen the body can absorb while exercising.
